Moving House Checklist — Everything You Need to Do

A complete moving house checklist for UK home movers, organised by timeframe from 8 weeks before to moving day itself. Don't leave anything to the last minute.

Moving House Checklist — Everything You Need to Do

Moving house is one of the most stressful things most people do — but a good plan makes it dramatically easier. This moving house checklist is organised by timeframe so you can tick things off as you go, rather than scrambling at the last minute.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Instruct your conveyancer — if you haven't already, get quotes and instruct as soon as possible

  • Get removal quotes — compare at least three removal companies or man and van services

  • Start decluttering — sell, donate, or skip anything you don't want to take with you. Less to move = lower cost

  • Research schools and GP surgeries — if you have children or need to register with a new GP at the new address

  • Check your buildings and contents insurance — make sure you understand when cover transfers to the new property

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Book your removal company — popular firms book up quickly, especially in summer and at month end

  • Start collecting packing materials — boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape. Supermarkets often give away sturdy boxes for free

  • Begin packing non-essentials — books, out-of-season clothes, decorative items

  • Notify your employer of your new address for payroll and HR records

  • Give notice to your landlord if you're renting and moving out

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Redirect your post — set up Royal Mail redirection from your old address

  • Notify your bank, pension, and financial institutions of your new address

  • Contact utility companies at your current address — give them your move-out date and arrange final meter readings

  • Set up utilities at the new property — electricity, gas, broadband. Check when broadband can be activated

  • Update your vehicle registration — you must notify the DVLA of your new address

  • Update your driving licence with your new address

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Confirm your removal booking and go over the details — access, parking, what time they'll arrive

  • Inform your children's school of the move date

  • Notify subscriptions and deliveries — Amazon, newspapers, milk delivery, online grocery delivery

  • Pack most rooms — leaving out only what you need day-to-day

  • Label boxes clearly — room name and brief contents. Use colour-coded labels if helpful

  • Arrange parking permits or a skip if needed at either address

Moving Week

  • Pack an essentials box — kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, toilet roll, phone charger, bedding, change of clothes, snacks, any medications. You'll want this immediately when you arrive and before you unpack everything else

  • Do a final sweep of every room — loft, garage, garden shed, under-stair cupboards

  • Take meter readings on the day you leave

  • Return all keys to the estate agent or previous owner

  • Take photos of the property as you leave (especially if renting — for your deposit)

Moving Day

  • Be ready when the removal crew arrives — have everything packed and labelled

  • Take meter readings at the new property as soon as you arrive

  • Check all windows, doors, locks, and appliances

  • Locate the fuse box, stopcock, and boiler

  • Unpack the essentials box first

  • Put the kettle on — you've earned it

After Moving Day

  • Notify the electoral roll of your new address (via gov.uk)

  • Update your NHS registration and GP

  • Contact the council tax office at your old and new addresses

  • Update your home insurance policy with your new address
